Survivor: Kindergarten

I made it!! And it actually wasn't bad at all! I was laughing pretty much the whole day because kids are both inexplicably weird and go from a mile a minute to drooling on their nap-mats.
Jon, Caitlin and I got to school (Sacred Hearts Prep, in Lahaina) around 7 and went to our classes. He had 7th, she had 3rd, I had K. Luckily there is an aide in the class (stacey) who was there until lunch and she helped make my life much easier. I quickly went from "Mr. Wesley" to "Miss/Mrs. Weswey"... good one. Grow up! But of course I just laughed and let it happen because I'm terrible with discipline and just chuckled most the time when I was trying to be serious.
We started the day with days of the week/the date and then moved on to the letter F. We practiced writing Ff and thought of fun, fantastic phonics that go with the letter. Following that, we went to church/prayer where they all behaved wonderfully the entire time! Then we had snack...corndogs. I got one too... obvi. And then had a recess break. Jon, Caitlin and I were discussing how organized/diplomatic little kids can be; whether playing kick-ball or knockout...any thing really.
We all lined up in single file and walked to the bathrooms and then back to class. Then we went over word problems using counting blocks: "If a school of fish has 6 fish and a shark comes and eats 2, how many fish are left!?" I lost count.
Then we went to Hawiiana Class where we learned Hawaiian words/culture, listened to some Ukulele and drew pictures of canoes! Each student came up and showed me what they drew and why. It was amazing to see how some kids just scribbled jibberish on the page, whereas others meticulously drew detailed canoes with flowers or even "black whole with an alien ship that sucks up all the water!"
When we were excused there, we went back and grabbed our lunches and headed to lunch. School served hamburger stew and bread with peaches. I had that AND a salad... mmmm. Then it was recess and I was on duty to watch the little rugrats. There were a few "he said the word hate!" and "she won't share!" but for the most part it went well.

Also, on the way to lunch I was walking with one of the boys who followed me around pretty much all day and sat next to me at every opportunity. I decided I could sneak out a fart but it didn't work as silently as I thought it would. He was a step ahead and when he spun around, grinning from ear to ear, we both burst out laughing. Should change the name from Sacred Hearts to Sacred Farts! haha! ...I hope I never grow up.

Thank god nap time came after that because I was starting to fade. That lasted 30mins... which I swear they sped the clocks up... and most students were up and at 'em too quick. One girl in particular was dead to the world, asleep and had to be woken up. Gonna have to spray her mat down from all the drool! haha
We had dress rehearsal next for the Thanksgiving Play... my favorite part of the day. They all got dressed in their indian/pilgrim outfits (consisting of pillow cases and a few hats/head dresses) and marched single file to the cafeteria to practice. On stage there was a cardboard cut out painted to look like a ship and a few props including a cardboard fish, pumpkin and fire. The kids separated into their places an put on the show for "Mr. Wesley," who had yet to see it. The first time went great! They had a few slip ups but for the most part everyone remembered their lines ("what a long trip from England" stated one boy in an impressive British accent. His pilgrim hat was far too big and could hardly see over the ship cutout). At the end they all say "Happy Thanksgiving!!" at the top of their lungs.
Not content with this, the theater teacher runs through it another 3 times... after the second attempt, the kids lost attention and motivation quickly. Nudges were given to the kids not paying attention when their lines came and others just changed the words. It was hilarious!
After they practiced Christmas songs. One was known by a few and the second (Break out the holly!...or something like that. I don't even know the friggen words.) turned into some murmurs and "laalaa la las" that didn't follow any real melody.
The rest of the day (30mins or so) was spent playing and doig puzzles and whatnot until kids were dismissed. Jon and I were asked to be the crossing guards which we happily agreed to since we got to don a flashy vest and hold a big stop sign!

All in all... a great and fun day!! Now off to maui brewing co!

  1. not sure how many days you are actually spending in the younger grades so just in case its a lot...books to consider for your trouble with discipline... "Beyond Discipline, From Compliance to Community" by Alfie Kohn and "Constructive Guidance and Discipline" By Marjorie and Debby Fields
