Wow. Where to begin?!
Somewhere between meeting tons of new people and getting to see more of this amazing island, I think my face froze into a permanent smile.
On Friday I spent the day on the bus going down to Lahaina to get a few things done. I applied to both Sacred Hearts Prep school for subbing (I sub kindergarten on Monday!...ohhhh boy!) and King Kahmehameha III (something like that), which is a school for special needs. The latter will take a little while to get into the system but I'm pretty stoaked to work there. When I was told I was subbing for Kindergarten the ladies in the office (one is laura's momma) would start laughing maniacally which does not bode well for me...
After that I jumped back on the bus; which I have to add I'm glad I figured out a day pass is 2 bucks because each ride is 1buck and taking several buses or jumping off in different places starts to add up! Now I just flash my pass like I've been doing it forever and feel like a total badass. People ask me the schedule and I actually know it... such a local. So after applying I picked up some fin screws for my board and a leash. Now I can officially go shred some gnar! Head off to gnar-nia. Call up King Gnar-thur and go kill it. Cure my Gnar-colepsy with some waves! hahaha.... ok you get the point.
Upon arriving home I received notice that a bunch of friends were down at Flemming's Beach having a BBQ for Chris, who is leaving today for Morocco! I walked down the hill to the lower road and started thumbing it. The first person to scoop me up was an older lady (70+) who got me to Napili. She was a sweet lady and she explained how time-shares work because she sells them. Then soon after I was out of the car I was back into the bed of a truck that already had another dude in it. The guys who gave me a lift seemed about my age and definitely surfers. The guy in the back was a little sketchy with long fingernails and was on the phone with some girl and was bitching about some drama... ya hate to see it folks. But I gave them a big "Mahalo" and met up with the gang on the beach! We swilled a few beers and one of Chris' friends, Daniel, introduced me to some great Hawaiian food! I had smoked octopus and Poi (a semi-tasteless puree that adds more of a texture to foods like octopus moreso than flavor. It can come refrigerated or in a bag like frosting) and Hawaiian sweet potatoes (they're purple!). So much phenom-nomenal food! So we all stuffed our faces with grilled chicken and hotdogs and avocados...everything! SOOOO good!
The next morning we met up with the gang again and had breakfast at the Honolua Store. Then we trekked up to Cliff House. This is a little house in secluded bay that is built out on some cliffs where the water is crystal clear and there are cool jumping spots! On our way in I went up to check out the burrows where the Wedgetails live (little duck-like birds) and when I bent over to look in the hole I didn't notice a stick protruding from a log and stabbed myself in the eye. It was one of those moments where you see it coming straight at your eye but you don't fully register that you're going to get poked until it's too late... never pleasant. But the birds were cool!
So while we were jumping off the cliffs I looked out to the ocean with my good eye and saw a pod of Spinner Dolphins! They jump out of the water and twirl around like figure skaters leaping into the air doing some double-axles! So cool. Then I looked down and there were two big ol' sea turtles waving up at us before diving back down! It was like an episode of Planet Earth!
Next we decided to head up the coast to go to Lorraine's banana bread stand! We headed north on this winding road on the coast that soon turned into a one lane road with the cliff about 6inches to the left. Absolutely beautiful landscapes through there though! Went up past some of the most famous surf locations like Windmills and Honolua Bay! When we got to Lorraine's I wasn't even hungry... but we all know I can't say no to food. I bought an ice-cream sandwich, which according to Lorraine, herself, takes two people to eat... pffft yeah right! I nommed that down! haha It was two thick slices of banana bread dipped in chocolate with ice-cream between all frozen together... uhhhh I want another just writing this!! We hung out there for some time and talked with Lorraine and she gave us some fresh spices from her garden too!
Then we trekked back to Kahana and we took naps before work...
It's a tough life I lead folks.
Today was pretty relaxed. Did a run-swim-run with Uncle Jon. We ran by the cameras shooting for ESPN. They're here for the Maui Invitational (college hoops). We thought it'd be funny if the announcers were saying something along the lines of "and here come a few basketball players now..." but then Jon and I run by in our short shorts before the players! hahaha
Now it's just reading and relaxing before work! (Reading What is the What- Dave Eggers...it's excellent)
Aloha, folks!
PS- forgot my camera in the car for the cliff house... documented the second half though... more pics to come.
